Why do Muslims take round of Kaba in Hajj and Umrah?

Why Muslim Take Round of Kaba

Muslims circumambulate the Kaaba during the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages as a ritual act of worship and a symbolic expression of their devotion to Allah (God) and their unity as a global Muslim community. This ritual is known as "Tawaf," and it involves walking around the Kaaba in a counterclockwise direction seven times.

There are several reasons why Muslims perform Tawaf during Hajj and Umrah:

  • Obedience to Allah: Tawaf is a form of obedience to Allah's command. According to Islamic tradition, Allah commanded Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his son Isma'il (Ishmael) to build the Kaaba as a place of worship. As part of this construction, they were also instructed to establish the practice of circumambulation. Muslims see themselves as following in the footsteps of these great prophets by performing Tawaf.
  • Symbolic Meaning: The act of circumambulating the Kaaba symbolizes the concept of unity and equality in Islam. When Muslims from all over the world gather in Mecca and perform Tawaf together, it signifies their unity and equality before Allah, regardless of their race, nationality, or social status.
  • Spiritual Cleansing: Tawaf is seen as a form of spiritual purification and a means of seeking forgiveness for one's sins. As pilgrims circle the Kaaba, they often pray, recite Quranic verses, and seek Allah's mercy and forgiveness.
  • Connection to History: Tawaf connects Muslims to the historical events involving the Kaaba, including the life of Prophet Ibrahim and his family. It reminds them of the faith and devotion of these early prophets and their role in establishing the monotheistic tradition of Islam.
  • Pilgrimage Ritual: Tawaf is an essential component of both Hajj and Umrah, two of the most significant acts of worship in Islam. Completing Tawaf is one of the obligatory rites of these pilgrimages, and they cannot be considered complete without it.
  • Physical Act of Worship: Islam encourages physical acts of worship to engage the whole self, not just the mind or the heart. Tawaf is a physical manifestation of devotion that engages the body in the act of worship.

During Tawaf, pilgrims typically recite supplications, engage in remembrance of Allah, and express their love and devotion to Him. It is a deeply spiritual and meaningful act that is central to the Hajj and Umrah experiences for Muslims.
